Only one of four local varsity football teams survived the weekend’s opening round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs.
Friday’s lone winner from St. Joseph County was Mendon, which won a road contest over St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic, 39-12. The Hornets, now 8-2, will square off this upcoming weekend at Climax-Scotts, a 10-0 team and ranked No. 2 in Division 8.
Climax-Scotts had little trouble at home Friday in a 52-7 victory over Colon.
Three Rivers saw its season end Friday in Zeeland, where Hudsonville Unity Christian claimed a 24-6 win.
Meanwhile, Constantine gave up the lead in the second half Friday and bowed to Schoolcraft, 40-28, in Division 6 action at Schoolcraft.
