Joan J. Harmon, 79 of Sturgis, Mich., passed away June 6, 2009, at the Heartland Health Care Center in Kalamazoo, Mich.
She was born June 30, 1929, in Sturgis, Mich., a daughter to the late Freddie F. and Cora (Nihart) Messner.
Joan had resided in the Sturgis and White Pigeon area all of her life. On Sept. 10, 1949, she married Edward A. Harmon at the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. He died Jan. 17, 2003.
Following 13 years of employment with the Ameritrust National Bank in Sturgis, she retired in 1990. She had also been employed by the Kirsch Company, Wade Electric and General Fire Proofing, all in Sturgis.
Joan was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson.
She enjoyed working with stained glass, cross stitch, crocheting and watching NASCAR.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Giavonni) Iannotti of Sterling Heights, and Krystal Schwartz of Gobles; five sons, David (Monique) Harmon of Sacramento, Calif., Mark (Ranah) Harmon of Elkhart, Ind., Keith (Debbie) Harmon of Columbus, Ind., Dale (Rebecca) Harmon of Galesburg and Timothy Harmon of Paw Paw; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Donna) Messner of Sturgis; one sister, Julie Brandt of Neptune Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Her parents; husband; one grandson, Justin Harmon; and one sister, Mary Schram, preceded her in death.
In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Joan J. Harmon will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091. The Rev. Father Richard Fritz of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson will officiate. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
