State panel heard public input on sports complex

Opponents and proponents of a proposed multi-field sports complex in the Three Rivers area offered plenty of input Tuesday before a state panel.
The State Boundary Commission, a five-member board under the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, staged a public hearing relevant to a 77-acre parcel the city of Three Rivers is attempting to annex from Lockport Township. More than 150 people crammed A Place In Time banquet facility in downtown Three Rivers to witness the proceeding.
The property in question lies between North Main Street to the west and Buckhorn Road to the east. The bulk of the parcel is south and southeast of The Meadows senior community.
State Boundary Commission member David Doyle said the purpose of Tuesday’s gathering was merely for public comment. The commission will reconvene in April to review all input received on the issue – the window of time for comment on the matter is open through Jan. 12 – and potentially make a recommendation at that time. A final decision by the state would then likely be yielded in July.
Most opponents who spoke Tuesday against the proposed 17-field complex consistently stated they don’t object to the plan, but the location so close to neighborhoods was at the crux of their disdain.
Those in favor said the potential location is close to U.S. 131 – ideal for out-of-town patrons – provide an unparalleled recreational opportunity and is a safe bike ride away for the number of kids who will use the facility.
The development is projected to cost $4.1 million to construct.
