Ground breaking for student housing project

Glen Oaks Community College officials this week staged a ceremonial ground breaking for a 108-bed student housing project.
Wednesday’s ceremony followed a vote by the college’s board of trustees to approve a $5.3 million bid, submitted by Frederick Construction of Vicksburg, to build the new dormitory on the school’s campus.
Construction is expected begin in coming weeks, weather permitting, with plans for the project to be complete prior to the fall 2017 semester.
Plans for the three-story student housing project include two- and four-suite units that share kitchen and living areas, and two bathrooms. The facility will be located on the north side of the main parking lot, west of the main facility.
Glen Oaks is the first Michigan community college to use a low-cost USDA Rural Development federal 30-year loan to finance the housing project. Its interest rate is 2.38 percent.
