County agrees to MSU extension contract

St. Joseph County officials last week approved an agreement to continue extension services from Michigan State University.
The matter had been debated during budget discussions but ultimately, commissioners agreed to a contract in excess of $123,000
For the money, St. Joseph County will receive an educator and program coordinator, both on a part-time basis. In addition, the allocation will cover base assessment.
As part of the agreement, the county will provide office and meeting space, utilities and telephone, high-speed internet and clerical support.
MSU has the option of employing at its own cost additional extension educators reporting to agriculture and agribusiness institute, and additional 4-H program capacity.
The 12-month agreement begins Jan. 1.
