John Andrew Cook, age 75, of Sturgis, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 14, 2017, at his home, with his family at his side.
He was born Dec. 29, 1941, in Chicago, a son of the late Frederick and Ruth (Grimes) Cook.
John resided in Sturgis since 1970, coming from Schoolcraft. His early life was lived in Niles, where he was a graduate of Niles High School with the class of 1959. He continued his education at Loyola University in Chicago and received a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
On Sept. 18, 1965, he married Susan Wall in Niles. She died Nov. 15, 2013.
John had been employed as manager of industrial engineering by Dometic Corporation in LaGrange, Ind., for several years. He also had been employed by Federal Mogul Corporation in Greensville, Ind., as an engineering supervisor, Marly Industries in Sturgis as plant manager and his last place of employment was with Precision Speed in Sturgis, where he held the position of staff industrial engineer.
He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves.
John was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sturgis and a member of Cedar Lake Golf Course. He also was a past member of B.P.O. Elks #1381 in Sturgis and enjoyed stamp collecting, model railroading, playing golf, genealogy research, history and trivia. He was an avid lifelong Notre Dame fan and for 10 years served as a Notre Dame usher. John loved time spent with his family, especially his children.
He is survived by a daughter, Tracy Clark of Sturgis; a son, Scott Cook of Sturgis; five grandchildren, Taylor Clark, Madison Clark, Elizabeth Cook, Kaitlin (Nick) Cook Ankney and Mallory Cook; two great-grandsons, Landon and Casen Ankney; a sister, Ruth Ann (Lawrence) McDonald of Cedar City, Utah; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Robert Cook; and a sister, Josephine Clark.
In accordance with John’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. A memorial Requiem Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Father Aaron Evans and Deacon Floyd Kunce will officiate. Placement of the ashes will follow Mass in St. John’s Garden.
