J. Jeanne McClain, age 94, of Mendon, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017 at her home. She was born in Sturgis, MI on May 5, 1922 the daughter of Marvin and Marion (Tubbs) Hays, and was later adopted by Thomas Elwyn Simpson and Edna Elizabeth (Brower) Simpson. Jeanne graduated from Mendon High School with the class of 1940 and later graduated from the Bronson School of Nursing. As a Registered Nurse, Jeanne worked many years in the Obstetrics Department at Three Rivers Hospital. Jeanne was married to G. Henry McClain on Aug. 13, 1951 in Mendon. Jeanne was generous with her time, volunteering for many organizations. She was a former member of the Mendon United Methodist Church and the Grace Circle. She was an accomplished seamstress, making many wedding dresses and performing alterations for friends and neighbors. She enjoyed gardening, bird-watching, and winters in Texas with her husband, Henry.
Jeanne is survived by four sons and their spouses, John (Patty) McClain of Three Rivers, Tom (Cheryl) McClain of Sun City, AZ, Jim (Mary) McClain of Sturgis, and Dick (Kim) McClain of South Bend, IN; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and by several in-laws. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; sister, Marilee Gaskill; and daughter Dana Lohraff.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Friday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Funeral services will be at 11 am Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at the funeral home with Rev. Clint Zehr officiating. Burial will be in Mendon Cemetery. It is suggested that memorial donations be directed to the Mendon Food Cupboard.
