June Joan McCarthy, age 80, of 1942 Alder Lane, Sturgis, died Saturday morning, Feb. 4, 2017, at her home.
She was born April 15, 1936, in Sturgis, a daughter of Chalmer Charles and Hazel Irene (Smith) Merriman. She was a resident of Sturgis for 53 years, moving there from White Pigeon.
On October 9, 1954, she married Michael Terence McCarthy at the Holy Angels rectory by Father Bernard Beahan in Sturgis.
She loved traveling. She made many trips to Wiesloch, Germany, Sturgis’ sister city. She also visited many other European countries. June visited all 50 states as well. Sidnaw, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, holds many wonderful memories for her as well as spending many winters in Lake Wales, Fla. All these trips were made with family and dear friends.
She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, Holy Angels Alter Society, Sturgis Hospital Pink Ladies and the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship Guild. She worked at Kirsch Corporation for 10 years.
Surviving are two children, Philip Michael McCarthy of White Pigeon and Patricia June McCarthy and her husband, Rick Terpstra, of Conklin. June has four grandchildren, Megan Marie (Dan) Brown of Middleville, Brendan Michael Powers of Grandville, Connor Joseph McCarthy of Mishawaka, Ind., and Lauren Elizabeth McCarthy of Mishawaka. She has one great-granddaughter, Emersyn Grace Brown of Middleville. She also is survived by a sister, Shirley Ann (Robert) Bale of Schoolcraft; and many nieces and nephews. Other very special people in her life were David Powers, Ann McCarthy, Lori and John Ash and Karen Meeth.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Terence McCarthy, on Oct. 31, 2008; and her father, Chalmer Charles Merriman; and her mother, Hazel Irene Merriman (Elwood) Reynolds.
A memorial service celebrating the life of June J. McCarthy will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. The Rev. Father Paul Redmond, St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church, will officiate.
