County dedicates veteran transition home

St. Joseph County officials dedicated the county’s first veterans transition home during a ceremony on Friday (4-28-17).
The house is for veterans who recently finished their term in service and want to live in the county, said Stoney Summey, director of veterans affairs for St. Joseph County. The home, located in the 21000 block of Schweitzer Road in Lockport Township, is a duplex with three bedrooms on each side.
During the time a resident stays at the transition home, Summey will dedicate himself to get the veteran mortgage-ready. During their time in the transition house, residents also can learn about health care benefits, education benefits, employment, quality of life issues and other information, Summey said.
The plan is for each veteran to stay in the transition home for about a year.
Centreville residents Al and Trudy Murk donated the lot where the house is being built.
