A civility proclamation was adopted Tuesday by the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners.
Board chairman Allen Balog said the idea was brought to the board by Jeff Gatton from the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce. Balog said Gatton hopes the proclamation will eventually be adopted by municipalities and other boards countywide.
The proclamation states, in part, that the adopting entity is committed to encouraging, creating and sustaining an environment that honors the inherent dignity of every member of the community. Furthermore, it states respectful behavior should always be the norm in all forms of communications and in all situations.
As an aside, the statement concludes with a quote from Notre Dame’s Father Theodore Hesburgh, who stated: “It’s alright to disagree but not to be disagreeable.”
