Sturgis approved request from fish supplier

Sturgis is expected to become a central, short-term warehousing hub for live fish from Minnesota to New York restaurants and suppliers.
American Fish Hauling received approval for a special land-use request Wednesday from the Sturgis Planning Commission that will allow trucks, operating like mobile aquariums, to stop in the city to refresh the shipping water.
According to Will Prichard, the city’s building/planning/zoning administrator, the company operates fish farms in Minnesota, harvesting mature fish, then trucking them live to East Coast end users.
Prichard said Sturgis is at about the half-way point on the trip east and the 14,000 feet of industrial warehouse at 331 Center Court will allow workers to boost the water’s oxygen level and cool it by adding fresh water for the remainder of the transport.
The transported fish, including buffalo carp, tilapia and striped bass, will not be stored on site.
