Trains sounding their warning horns once again in South Bend

Freight trains that once irritated South Bend residents with warning horns are disturbing their peace once again after years of relative silence.

Locomotives began sounding their horns last weekend along a stretch of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad on the northern Indiana city’s east side.

Joseph Araman tells the South Bend Tribune that passing locomotives are now beeping their horns at crossings waking up sleeping residents.

The railway that’s a subsidiary of the Canadian National Railway says it resumed using the horns after learning that several crossing in the city didn’t comply with Federal Railroad Administration public safety standards.

The federal agency had certified South Bend as a quiet zone in 2007.

South Bend officials are working with the railway and the railroad administration to resolve the latest issue.  (AP)
