A Nottawa Township resident is expected to receive a much-needed gift today.
The St. Joseph County Commission On Aging and a team of volunteers plans to show up at the M-86 residence and assist with building an access ramp. The ramp will allow the wheelchair-bound resident to exit and enter her residence on her own and safely.
Ruth Mancina, marketing and life-enrichment manager for the COA, said the project also includes the Area Agency on Aging, as the two pooled their resources to assist with the ramp. Mancina said the ramp will represent the county agencies coming together to address a need.
Materials to build the ramp are being provided at a discounted rate, a local builder assisted with securing the needed permits, a couple of organizations pulled together volunteers to provide the labor and the county’s grant writer secured funds to benefit the project.
