Former TR students survive Vegas shooting

Three Sturgis High School graduates were among the survivors of Sunday’s mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Alexandra Brazo, a senior at University of Nevada-Las Vegas, said Olivia Tom and Rachelle DeLong flew to Nevada last week to attend the Route 91 Harvest Festival.

They were near the stage while country/western singer Jason Aldean performed his event-ending set. Brazo said she initially dismissed the first round of gunfire as firecrackers or the firework novelty “poppers.”

The three soon were seeking cover and managed to run unscathed from the scene, climbing over a fence-topped concrete barrier and crawling under another fence, running until they reached the Tropicana Hotel and Casino. They eventually sought refuge in the Bluegreen Vacations Club on the north side of East Las Vegas Boulevard.

A criminal-justice major who will graduate in December, Brazo said she will never feel the same sense of security at an event involving a crowd of people.
