White Pigeon building receives restoration donation

The U.S. Land Office in White Pigeon was the recent recipient of a donation from Sturgis Bank & Trust Company for continued restoration of the facility.

In recognition of that effort, bank officials presented a $5,000 check to members of the St. Joseph County Historical Society.

Trudy Gloy, White Pigeon branch manager, said the bank supports communities when it can and a contribution toward the restoration effort was a worthwhile project to support.

The land office was builtĀ in 1830, opened the next year, then closed in 1834. It was last restored 32 years ago.

Members of the historical society have been raising money through donations and grants for necessary repairs to the building, including replacement of the old standing seam roof, which cannot be patched or coated.

In summer 2017, its windows and doors were replaced, siding that was not restorable was replaced.

To date, the society has raised more than $24,000 toward a $36,000 goal.
