State grant will upgrade Constantine Road

A one-mile stretch of Constantine Road will be upgraded thanks to a state grant and financial contributions from two local entities.

During last week’s county commission meeting, Commissioner Dennis Allen said he received confirmation of the funding from Michigan Department of Transportation. The financial help will be provided through a “High Risk Rural Roads” grant. The 80/20 grant will see MDOT cover 80 percent of the cost, while the road commission and Florence Township will each kick in $13,500 to make up the 20 percent difference.

Total cost with engineering and inspection is $275,000.

The stretch in question will cover Constantine Road from Roys Road north to Fairchild Road. Road commission manager Chris Minger said the presence of a rail crossing adds to the cost of the undertaking.

Minger said the road commission later in 2018 will get the one-mile job on MDOT’s bid-letting list, and work will likely take place next summer.

A longer stretch of Constantine Road was upgraded from the White Pigeon village limits north to just past Stears Road earlier this summer.
