Man dies in Leonidas crash

A Mendon man died over the weekend in a two-vehicle accident in Leonidas Township, where rescue personnel said heavy fog played a role in the incident.

Sheriff’s deputies were called at 5:30 p.m. Sunday to the intersection of Summit and Pleasant roads, just west of Leonidas.

Investigators said Mark Russell, 60, was driving a Jeep west on Pleasant Road. Meanwhile, 27-year-old Tyler Bolen, of Kendallville, Ind., was driving north on Summit Road and because of dense fog, did not see a stop sign posted at the crossroads.

Bolen’s vehicle struck Russell’s Jeep, which was forced into a tree at the northwest quadrant of the intersection. Investigators said Russell died at the scene.

Bolen and a female passenger were treated at Bronson Methodist Hospital after suffering minor injuries, authorities said.

Investigators said speed may have been a factor in the incident.
