Out and About – Week of January 29th

In recent columns, I’ve given a lot of attention to keeping and disposing of important papers and documents. Everyone carries some very important things with them all the time. I’m referring to your driver’s license, health insurance card and, of course, credit cards. These items are usually kept in a wallet or purse, both of which can easily be lost or stolen. It’s been suggested that it might be a good idea to photocopy these items and place them in a central file in your home. If these items come up missing, it will be easier to replace tthem, because you will have the information and numbers close at hand.

Our state has often been referred to as the “Water Wonderland” or “The Great Lake State.” Lake Michigan is probably the most popular, because of the many fine beaches located along the west coast. It’s also known for being responsible for some severe winter storms we receive because of the lake effect. You don’t hear too much about Lake Huron, and Lake Erie is too far east, and I think Ohio feels as though Lake Erie is their lake. Lake Superior, on the other hand, is scary to me. After all, it claimed the Edmund Fitzgerald and its crew. Here are a few facts on the lake that never really warms up:

The maximum wave ever recorded on Lake Superior was 9.45 meters or 31 feet high.
Lake Superior rarely freezes over completely, and then usually just for a few hours. Complete freezing occurred in 1962, 1978, 2003, and 2009.
I’ve worn eyeglasses since the fourth grade. I tried contact lenses for a while, but I kept losing one of them in my eye, which can be very uncomfortable. As a result, I wear glasses all the time. I sort of envy those who need glasses just to read or see something up close. They usually have their glasses hanging from a chain around their neck or have them perched on the front of their nose, which means that when they are talking to someone, they end up looking over the top of the glasses. Some eyeglass wearers keep their glasses on the top of their head. If you’re bald, this isn’t a problem, but if you have a full-head of hair, how do you keep the glasses from getting smudged? Perhaps it’s a sign of being cool. I’ve tried walking around with my glasses on the top of my head and ended up walking into someone or falling down a stairway. I didn’t look very cool.

I’m pretty much living the dream. I want very little and am happy with my life. I still have hopes, dreams and goals. I think we should all have those things. Otherwise, life could be boring. I’m sure the richest person in the world still has goals. Hoping and dreaming for a more civil world is something we all should be doing. In some cases, that’s all we can do.

A good example of hope might be going to bed every night with no assurance that we will wake up the next morning; however, we still set the alarm clock, hoping that we will be able to hit that snooze button.

Here are a few things that might make you chuckle or think, “Hmmmm”.

Does a clean house indicate that there is a broken computer in it?
Why is it that no matter what color of bubble bath you use, the bubbles are always white?
Why doesn’t toothpaste ever go rotten?
Is there ever a day when mattresses are NOT on sale?
How come, when you first pull the drapery cord, the drapes always move the wrong way?
Time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted.

See you Out and About!
