Dual enrollment legislation signed

Students of school districts along state borders will have more dual enrollment education options after Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday signed into law legislation by State Rep. Aaron Miller.

The new law amends the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act with the stipulation that the out-of-state post-secondary education and dual enrollment school must be within 20 miles of the shared border for students enrolled in a public, charter or private school district.

Miller thanked Brent Holcomb, superintendent of the Lewis Cass Intermediate School District in Cass County, and Stephen McNew, superintendent of the Monroe County Intermediate School District, who joined him for House and Senate committee testimony. The superintendents illustrated the limitations of previous law, while sharing how their districts could benefit from a co-operative agreement.

House Bill 4735 is now Public Act 11.
