Colon considers selling property for store development

Colon’s municipal officials are reconsidering a plan to sell a piece of village-owned property on which a Dollar General would like to develop a store.

During a village council special meeting Tuesday, nearly a dozen people urged the seven-member panel to table the matter and hold off on selling the parcel at 210 W. South St., referred to as “the Decker Property.”

In advance of making a motion to table the issue, council member Dick Delp said he didn’t find out until just five hours before the meeting that Dollar General was the business interested in the property.

Council President Diane Downs said she will meet with village attorney Deb Davis and review the council’s options.

The village stands to net $75,000 if the property is sold.

The council’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday next week, at which time an update on the situation could be presented.
