Students raise money for St Jude’s

Students at Riverside Elementary School in Constantine raised more than $800 through a penny drive to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The penny drive ran for five weeks, concluding in late January, and was organized by fourth-grade teacher Carolyn Niblock. She said the accomplishment shows that school is not only about education, but life skills, too.

Niblock said kids posted the project on Facebook, took cans around the neighborhood to collect and asked parents if they could do odd jobs around the house for money.

When they earned a dollar, the kids would go to the bank and ask to trade it in for pennies. Niblock joked that the nature of the event yielded an abundance of counting, which helped students hone their math skills.
