Out and About – Week of July 13

This last weekend, we once again left our comfort zone of Three Rivers and traveled south to White Pigeon. We didn’t need a passport, and we didn’t need to make sure our immunization record was current. White Pigeon is the home of Lilly Jean’s, a drive-in, where they still have carhops and you can enjoy a good hot dog and root beer without spending too much money. They even have classic cars show up on Tuesday evenings. Anyway, after a tasty supper, we found a parking spot near the high school and watched the White Pigeon Days parade, a good old fashioned American parade, complete with color guard, tractors, marching band, and a few fire trucks. It was a weather-perfect evening and a wonderful Out and About event.

The Three Rivers High School class of 1964 will host a multi-class gathering this Friday evening, July 17. Graduating classes from 1962 through 1967 will converge on downtown Three Rivers starting around 6 P.M. The block starting at the intersection of North Main and Portage Avenue and running down to Joshua Drive will be blocked off so that some classic cars will have a place to park. This is not a formal get-together, but rather a social time when classmates will have the opportunity to become reacquainted and talk about the good ole days. The Riviera Theatre will be one of the gathering places, and the downtown merchants have agreed to stay open a little later for those wishing to do a little shopping. Tom Meyer, class of 1962, is doing what he can to make sure the old Newberry’s store is available. He is planning to have tables and chairs set up. This will  provide another place where the old folks can try to recall what happened over forty years ago. There will be plenty of law enforcement personnel on duty in case someone gets a bit rowdy. The Commission on Aging regrets to inform those in attendance that they will not be available to provide transportation back to “the home”.

Speaking of the Commission on Aging (COA), they provide a monthly Caregiver Education & Support Group. The program provides assistance to caregivers in understanding and coping with a broad range of issues associated with caregiving. This ongoing support group meets the second Tuesday of every month at the Three Rivers Community Center, 103 S. Douglas in Three Rivers. For time and more information, please contact Sherry Swartz, In-Home Service Coordinator, at 279-8083 or 1-800-641-9899.

The Fabius Park Twp Fire Department has been in their new home for a month or so now and they figure it’s time to have the community check it out. Located on West Broadway in Three Rivers, the new station will have an open house this Saturday, July 18, from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. Some of their special guests include West Michigan Air Care, St. Joe County Sheriff Dept., Michigan State Police, St. Joe County Dive Rescue, and of course, you, the citizens of this great community.

There’s nothing like a good massage to help you forget your aches and pains. The Three Rivers Senior Center, 103 South Douglas, Three Rivers, will have a certified massage therapist available for those wishing to experience this therapy. The therapist will be at the Senior Center Tuesday, July 21 from 9 A.M. till noon. Prices start at $10 for a quarter hour. Appointments are necessary, and they can be made by calling the Commission on Aging at 279-8083 or 1-800-641-9899.

We’ve had a pretty decent summer, weather-wise, so far. I strongly advise that we all get out and enjoy the many activities that abound here in the Three Rivers area.

      See you Out and About!
