Sturgis city commission considers cemetery fence

Sturgis city commissioners and city staff last week mulled a plan to fence in the west, south and most of the north sides of Oak Lawn Cemetery.

The proposal has been raised in an effort to reduce vandalism and increase safety.

Facilities manager Daniel Root will return with options and commissioners will revisit the matter.

The lowest of seven bids was just over $190,000, with remaining parts of the project bringing the total to about $250,000. Aspects include electricity for three automatic gates, concrete to straighten the sidewalk along South Street, a cul-de-sac for the north drive, an entrance sign, masonry for sign posts and site preparation.

Due to expense required to repair monuments, Sturgis Area Community Foundation has committed $ 70,000 to the project.
