Bill Harter, 70

William E. Harter, age 70, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 16, 2018, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.
He was born Sept. 9, 1947, in Sturgis, a son of the late Virgil Martin and Viola Belle (Nusbaum) Harter.
Bill was a lifelong Sturgis resident and graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1965.
He retired from Kirsch Company in Sturgis following 34 years of dedicated employment.
Bill was proud to have served his country during the Vietnam War, earning the rank of private first class.
He had a true love and appreciation for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, playing pool and had a passion for music and fishing.
He is survived by four sons, Paul Harter, Billy (Loretta) Harter of Sturgis, Mark (Lynn) Harter of Sturgis and Michael Harter of Three Rivers; seven grandchildren,: Joshua, Ashley, Alyssa, Tiffany, Lillian, Katrina and Jenett; great-grandchildren; a brother, James Harter of Sturgis; and two nephews, Jamie (Misty) Harter of Three Rivers and Chris (Teresa) Harter of Otsego.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister-in-law, Carol Harter.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of William E. Harter will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Pastor Joshua Brueck of the Sturgis Missionary Church will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. Full military honors will be conferred by Capt. John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
