Herbert Nihart, 88

Herbert D. Nihart, age 88, of White Pigeon, died Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Sturgis Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 30, 1929, in Middleburg, Ind., a son of Jay E. and Maggie (Birkey) Nihart.
He was a graduate of Middleburg High School and a resident of Middleburg until 1952, when he moved to White Pigeon. He was employed at White Pigeon Paper Company for 40 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a church elder, and a member of Swartz-VanFleet Post #138 American Legion, both of White Pigeon. He enjoyed golf, fishing, bowling, high school sports, Indiana basketball and, most of all, time with his family at Fish Lake. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
On Oct. 5, 1952, he married Betty J. Airgood at the Presbyterian Church. She survives, along with his sons, Rick (Wanda) Nihart of White Pigeon and Gary (Leslie) Nihart of Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael A. Nihart; a sister, Dolores Troyer; and brothers Calvin and Jay Nihart.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church in White Pigeon, with Pastor Steve Kaszar officiating. interment will follow at White Pigeon Township Cemetery, with military rites by White Pigeon American Legion.
