A Sturgis man has been nominated by President Donald Trump to represent the United States on the International Joint Commission between the U.S. and Canada.
Rob Sisson said the IJC was created in 1909 through the Boundary Waters Treaty with Canada. It is a six-person commission comprised of three representatives from the United States and three from Canada.
The mission of the IJC is to prevent and resolve disputes primarily involving water quantity and quality at the borders, Sisson said, noting that the process is in the Senate.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will consider the nominations first and if they are agreeable, they’ll vote to send the nominations to the full Senate for confirmation.
It’s a process that could take several months, Sisson said.
