Charles D. “Chuck” Snyder, age 79, a lifelong resident of Sturgis, passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, at South Bend Memorial Hospital.
He was born Nov. 15, 1939, in Sturgis, a son of the late Walter H. and June A. (Murray) Snyder.
On Aug. 20, 1960, he married Judith A. “Judy” Clouse in Sturgis.
Chuck had been employed by Sturgis Carton Company, Sturgis Journal and Oak Products, where he retired after 39 plus years of employment.
He enjoyed woodworking, bowling, golfing, bingo, gambling, casinos, collecting M&M memorabilia and once built a kit car with his son. They referred to it as their “hunk of junk.”
He was a member of Sturgis Eagles Lodge and a “Golden Eagle.” He did volunteer work at Camp Fort Hill, local churches and cemeteries where he would mow and fix damaged headstones.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; a son, Dean (Nonnie) Snyder; and a daughter, Theresa Schwemer all of Sturgis; five grandchildren, Chad (Ashley) Snyder, Seth (Fawnda) Snyder, Jared Snyder, Dalton (Amanda) Schwemer and Andrea Shank; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gladys (Tom) Shields of Sturgis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Walter E. “Pete” Snyder; a sister, Ruth L. Holmes; and stepfather Cecil “Jock” Beers.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis.
Services celebrating the life of Chuck Snyder will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Larry Wallman officiating. Interment and graveside services will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be directed to the charity of one’s choice . Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
