Cass County standoff ends in suspect’s arrest

A pursuit that started in Elkhart County ended after a standoff at a residence in Cass County.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies assisted Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department deputies, who were in pursuit of a suspect with multiple felony warrants.

The pursuit crossed into Cass County shortly before 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

The vehicle was pursued to the Edwardsburg area, where the suspect eventually fled from the vehicle and into a residence in the 21000 block of Channel Parkway.

Authorities said the suspect barricaded himself inside the home and was believed to be armed. Negotiations were conducted via cellphone and after approximately 50 minutes, the suspect exited the home and surrendered.

Investigators found that the suspect was driving a stolen vehicle during the pursuit.

Information about the suspect, including his age and community of residence, was not included in a department media release.
