New finance director attends first meeting

St. Joseph County Finance Director Angie Steinman was welcomed by the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners, as Tuesday marked her first time sitting in on the twice-a-month county commission meetings.

A Dowagiac native and current resident, Steinman formerly served as finance director of Cass County before she was offered the job in St. Joseph County. Her first day was Feb. 25 and Steinman said she will remember that first day and the fact she smiled the entire 40-minute drive home.

She said there is a learning curve to overcome, but likened the situation to switching to a new high school after her sophomore year.

Steinman said she appreciates that county administrator Teresa Doehring and her executive assistant, Pat Kulikowski, arranged for her to meet all department heads and elected officials in one-on-one, 30-minute meetings.

A mother of two daughters and grandmother of two granddaughters, the 42-year-old Steinman is being paid $84,000 a year.
