Armed robbery in Mendon – Four arrested

Four Kalamazoo residents were arrested after their involvement in two armed robberies Sunday, including an incident at the Marathon station in Mendon.

The suspects are: Davontey Sander, 18, and D’Andre Beowa, Peter Yates and Jaquayvion Garrett, all 17 years of age.

They are suspects in connection with an armed robbery at Marathon on West Main Street in Mendon. The incident was reported around 10:30 p.m. Sunday by an employee who told central dispatch the store had been robbed at gunpoint.

A short time later, a witness reported seeing a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner eastbound on M-60. Michigan State Police located the suspect vehicle in a nearby field after it apparently struck a utility pole near Zinsmaster Road.

Within minutes, state police troopers were joined by St. Joseph County sheriff’s deputies and officers from Colon and Mendon. A state police K-9 began to track the four suspects, who had fled through the property of a nearby factory, several fields and a wooded area until reaching Mendon High School. The suspects attempted to elude officers by climbing the fences of both the baseball and softball fields.

About an hour later, after a two-mile trek, the four were found hiding in a wooded area next to the baseball field.

Police found an undetermined amount of cash, along with a mask and bandana that may have been worn during the robbery, and a weapon was found in the vehicle.

The four also are suspects in an armed robbery that occurred earlier Sunday at Gourdneck Lake party store on Portage Road in southern Kalamazoo County.
