Work continues in Colon road project

The road project on M-66 at the M-86 split to Colon is progressing on schedule and Michigan Department of Transportation officials say a mid-November opening date remains a probability.

MDOT’s Nick Schirripa said the project has been erroneously called a bridge replacement. Once completed, the former bridge that once spanned a now-defunct railroad line will actually be a hot-mix asphalt roadway, not a bridge.

He said the gap is ready for another layer of fill in the embankment and that will be followed by a six- to eight-week waiting period necessary for it to settle.

Nashville Construction Co. of Barry County is the general contractor and cost of the project is almost $800,000.

The bridge closed April 15.
