A month after saying no to recreational marijuana, members of the Colon Village Council showed a greater tolerance for cannabis as a medicinal drug.
By a 5-2 vote Tuesday, the council passed a resolution in support of creating an ordinance related to the establishment of marijuana production and distribution for medical purposes within the village.
More than a dozen people addressed the council during public comment on the matter. The majority were in favor of the measure, citing the benefits of medical marijuana for treatment of various conditions.
A recurring theme centered on the fact that people who currently rely on medical marijuana will have a credible option, opposed to either driving to Portage or Kalamazoo, or by securing marijuana through local, illegal channels.
Brandon Baker, who is seeking the village’s OK to open marijuana businesses in Colon, owns two empty buildings in town – the former Magic Carpet restaurant on the west end of Colon and the former Magical Creations florist at the opposite side of town
A 2003 Colon High School graduate, Baker said the next steps after an ordinance is created is a public hearing followed by the council’s vote on whether to adopt the ordinance.
