A four-month, bridge-construction project in White Pigeon Township concluded Monday.
As a result, the South Kalamazoo Street bridge over the Pigeon River is now open. The river crossing had been closed since July 23.
A ceremonial ribbon-cutting event took place Monday afternoon, and involved township and St. Joseph County Road Commission officials. They celebrated the opening of a new, 120-foot-long bridge.
Road commission manager John Lindsey said the $1.4 million project was necessary to replace what was a 51-year-old bridge. He noted that state and federal sources covered 95 percent of the expenses.
Township Supervisor Don Gloy said the opening is a relief, especially for residents who live south of the span, as the closest detours were at Sevison Road to the east and U.S. 131 to the west.
