The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency has issued a reminder about kerosene safety, especially for families that rely on kerosene heaters to help heat their home.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, supplemental heating equipment, such as a kerosene heater, is the leading cause of home fires during the months of December, January and February.
Agency officials said kerosene heaters require 1-K grade kerosene. Never use a substitute, such as gasoline or camp stove fuel. Also, remember to check the wick every week during the heating season. Furthermore, never attempt to move a lighted kerosene heater. In addition, extinguish the flame and allow the heater to cool before moving.
Other tips include never refuel a kerosene heater inside or when the heater is still hot. Also, keep kerosene heaters at least three feet away from all furniture, curtains, papers, clothes, bedding and other combustible materials.
