Out and About for July 29th, 2008

A week from today is a big day in St. Joseph County. August 5 is a day when, once again, you have the opportunity to exercise your right to vote. Voting citizens in this county do not have a very good reputation for exercising this right. Actually, it’s pretty shameful. Case in point: Wal-Mart opened their doors in Three Rivers on August 8, 2007. More adults showed up for the grand opening than voted the day before for the millage for the St. Joe County Transportation Authority. Thankfully, the millage passed. Quite a few people’s futures depend on what you do next Tuesday. It’s YOUR business how you vote, but do the right thing and vote. Many people have made the ultimate sacrifice to insure that you have that right. Excuse me now while I step down off that soapbox.

A reminder about the 48th Annual Antique Tractor and Engine Show. It all happens this weekend, August 1, 2 and 3. Where? Boot Hill Ranch on Bair Lake Road, in Jones. Oh yes, the third annual Tractor Tour leaves the campground Thursday, July 31. The tour will take you on a 65-70 mile trip, staying Thursday night in Sturgis and returning to Jones on Friday. Anyone interested in participating, should contact Duane Hollister at (269)683-9537. For more information on the tractor and engine show, please contact Duane Hollister at the number just listed, or phone Daisy Wagner at (269)435-7241.

If you’d like a break in the Saturday chores, shut down the lawnmower and head on down to the Farmer’s Market at Scidmore Park. It’s open every Saturday from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. until October 25. Entrance to the market is on West Michigan Avenue, directly across from LA’s Coffee Cafe. They not only have farm-fresh produce, but you’ll also want to check out the crafts, meats, baked goods, flowers, and much more. On your way out, treat yourself and the family to an ice cream treat at LA’s Coffee Cafe. What a fantastic way to spend a Saturday morning.

For you Tiger Woods wanna-bees, the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual golf outing Wednesday, August 13, at Pine View Golf Club. I realize it’s still a couple of weeks away, but the deadline for registration is August 4. Cost is $50 per person. Pre-registration and payment is required and if you need a registration form, contact the Chamber office at 278-8193.

I mentioned several weeks ago about the TARGET Area Development Corporation. They have hosted two block parties and will host two more within the next week or so. The third party is August 2, Three Rivers District 1 and the fourth and final will be August 9 in the third district. One of the purposes of these block parties is to inform and encourage eligible voters to do their civic duty and vote. In fact, you may register to vote at these block parties. For more information, contact Lolita Foster at 279-1829.

Three Rivers Health will present a free Diabetes Educational Workshop next Tuesday, August 5. The workshop will run from 6:30 to 8 P.M. at A Place in Time, 54 Railroad Street in Three Rivers. Each attendee will receive a free educational gift, plus a free ACCU-CHEK blood glucose monitoring system. Refreshments will also be available. You must RSVP for the workshop. Phone 866-273-5461 or RSVP online at www.healthydiabeteshabits.com by August 4.

Something to think about: Why do psychics have to ask you your name?
