Out and About – Week of March 30th

Be very careful Wednesday as you venture out and about. It is, after all, April Fools Day, so you’ll want to double check the salt and pepper shakers to make sure someone hasn’t loosened their caps. Also, you shouldn’t believe all you hear to be true. My suggestion is to stay clear of Facebook.

The year 1952 was quite a year. Lipton introduced its famous onion soup mix and Kelloggs Cereal introduced Frosted Flakes. Also that year, Gibson introduced the Les Paul guitar.

Spring officially started last month on Friday, March 20. Many of us jump right into “spring cleaning”, because the weather is usually nice and we’re tired of our homes being a bit messy from the winter months. I have some suggestions that might make handling some of the clutter a little easier.

Get rid of the excess: How many cooking pots, baking pans, pencil holders, cookie jars, and earrings do you really need or use? You might want to separate infrequently used items into several boxes and label them “Toss”, “Sell”, “Give away”, or “Store for later”. Then, at your leisure, take care of each box.
Organize daily: Set aside a few minutes each day to pick up and organize the clutter from that day. Newspapers and junk mail are two good examples. By spending a few minutes daily, things have a less chance of becoming unmanageable.
Take it with you: Every time you leave the house, take something with you that needs to go somewhere. Things like garbage, dry cleaning, recycled newspapers, or scrap for the compost pile. Each time you take something with you, will save several separate trips.
A tidy toy box: If you have small children, you are bound to have toys laying all around the entire house. Try using built-in closet shelves that are at a child’s eye level. A colorful wooden chest, a wicker or plastic laundry basket could come in quite handy. Things like these might help a toddler learn to put away their own clutter.
Center Park United Methodist Church will host a special Canine Fundraiser for Jude the Comfort Dog on Saturday, April 18, from 5 to 7 PM. Jude is a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Three Rivers. Jude is the only Lutheran Charities Comfort Dog in Michigan. He keeps busy by visiting veteran centers, nursing homes, military funerals, and any place where the comfort he provides might be appreciated.

The fundraiser includes a delicious meal catered by Silver Spoons Catering. The menu consists of Italian Chicken, Broccoli Almond Salad, Potato Deluxe, Honey Gingered Carrots, a relish tray, and to top it off, a delicious cheesecake. While you’re dining, you will be entered by Morgan Crippin, Jeff Keefer, and Alex Williams. All of this can be yours for just $20 per ticket. All tickets must be purchased in advance. For tickets and more information, please contact Jim Romain at 269-435-7391.

Center Park Church is located at 18662 Moorepark Road, just north of Three Rivers.

We are hoping that the COVID crisis has subsided by this time.

Something to think about, but not to worry, is the fact that as of this writing, all restaurants and bars are closed to the public. Unfortunately, there are some organizations that depend on their bar and restaurant business to stay alive. Several examples would include The American Legion, Elks, Eagles and Moose. These organizations depend on their members’ business to pay utilities. Members should seriously think about this. Perhaps it’s time to be a little generous when it comes to donations.
