Candidates meet filing deadline for August ballot

Tuesday afternoon was filing deadline for candidates wishing to appear on the August primary ballot for various county posts.

It was also the filing deadline for candidates seeking to replace term-limited Aaron Miller to the 59th District House seat.

St. Joseph County Clerk Lindsay Oswald, who will be running unopposed for her second four-year term, said filing information for the county’s 16 township boards is to be released today. Other unopposed county candidates are David Mostrom for surveyor and Jeff Wenzel for drain commissioner.

Two-term county treasurer Judie Ratering announced earlier this year she would not be seeking re-election. Candidates for her post are Kathy Humphries and Tammy Rigby, both of Nottawa Township.

Three Rivers resident John McDonough, who is completing his third four-year term as county prosecutor, will be challenged by attorney David Marvin, of Lockport Township.

Sheriff Mark Lillywhite, a Flowerfield Township resident, will vie for the four-year sheriff’s term. He will be opposed by Gordon Evilsizor of Florence Township.

Hoping to succeed Allen Balog for a two-year term to the county commission are John Bippus of Fabius Township, Scott Doffman of Flowerfield Township and Fabius Township resident Jared Hoffmaster. The winner of the August primary will face Democrat Andrew George, a Three Rivers resident, in November.

Meanwhile, two-term commissioner Kathy Pangle, a Mendon resident, is being challenged by Kathy Greaves of Park Township.

Regarding the 59th House District seat, candidates for the two-year term are Allen Balog, a Three Rivers resident; Jack Coleman of Park Township; Nottawa Township resident Larry Walton; Three Rivers resident Steve Carra; and Daniel Hinkle of Cass County. The winner will face Democrat Amy East, a Cass County resident, in November.
