Veteran housing plan presented to county

An offer to house veterans in need of emergency housing was presented to the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners during their executive committee Wednesday.

Veterans administrator Stoney Summey said the department is in the process of opening a house that belongs to St. John’s Church in Sturgis. Summey explained the church contacted him regarding a potential use for the two-unit apartment building it is not using.

Summey said the state approved a grant through the County Veterans Service Fund. The grant will cover utilities and $300-per-month rent for the entire building. As a result, the proposal will not cost the county anything, he said.

Other than the need for an interior coat of paint, the units are move-in ready, Summey said.
