Colon cancels July 4th celebration

The village of Colon has called off this year’s Fourth of July community celebration.

The decision came by a 5-to-2 vote during the village council’s meeting Tuesday.

Village president Ruth Ann Kuhlmann said the difficult decision was made based on what was safest for participants and spectators.

Kuhlmann further stated it was sensible to not go against the advice of the village’s attorney and the local health department, as she shared a letter drafted by attorney Robert Thall, who recommended against following through with the one-day celebration. Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency Health Officer Rebecca Burns also advised against holding the celebration this year, Kuhlmann said.

It is estimated as many as 3,000 people gather along the parade route in Colon, making it the largest, single-day event in the village annually.

Linda Norton, one of two council members to cast a dissenting vote, said Fourth of July activities are all held outdoors and participation is optional, so the decision to be a part of the crowd should be left up to individual choice.
