Road commission directs funds to allocation fund

More than $2 million will be directed to local roads through the St. Joseph County Road Commission’s allocation fund.

In a collaboration between the road commission and 12 of the county’s 16 townships, the road commission has adopted a plan in which it will contribute 50 percent of costs toward improvements such as chip-seal and hot-mix asphalt.

The participating township contributes the other 50 percent.

Road commission managing director John Lindsey told board members last week that township contributions toward the program range from $10,000 to more than $150,000.

Lindsey made special note of one and a half miles of asphalt overlay work recently performed in the Fennell subdivision of Fawn River Township. The road commission put in half, taxpayers paid for a large portion through a special-assessment district and the township funded the remainder.
