Members of the Three Rivers Lions Club experienced an overwhelming response to their one-day Ox Roast event last weekend.
Member Alice Kielau said the club made the decision about three weeks ago to stage Saturday’s drive-thru event at its Sixth Avenue service center. The 2020 Ox Roast, which is synonymous with the three-day Three Rivers Water Festival, was a casualty of the cancelled community celebration that would have taken place in June.
Kielau said the event’s success was due to a number of factors that included good weather, lots of volunteer help and a pent-up demand for the sandwiches, beans and pie. In all several hundred sandwiches were sold, the beans had sold out by mid-afternoon and nearly every slice from 60 pies were purchased.
The club supports several Three Rivers- and St. Joseph County-based events and organizations.
