Out and About – Week of November 16th

I’m sure we all know of at least one person who has very low self-esteem. They have a low value of themselves and feel that no matter what they do, it just won’t measure up to the norm. If you feel that this problem fits you, here are some things that just might correct that feeling about yourself:

Sing in the shower. Preferably when there’s no one around who might offer criticism.
Plant flowers every spring.
Be forgiving of yourself and others.
Plant a tree on your birthday.
Don’t postpone joy.
We’ve all had the experience when our electrical power automatically shuts down. It could be a perfectly clear weather day without any storms in the forecast. Of course weather can cause power outages, but there are several other things that might cause the lights to go out. Squirrels, birds and other critters can come in contact with equipment such as transformers and fuses. This could cause equipment to momentarily fail or shut down completely. Age can very easily affect electric grids, which is a highly complex infrastructure with many mechanical elements. Like all machinery, they are not immune to breaking down. Then, of course, there are the everyday accidents where machinery and vehicles collide with electrical equipment. During inclement weather, it’s not uncommon to have downed power lines and broken poles. Probably one of the most popular causes of power failures is when we overload our own circuits and we blow a fuse or pop a circuit breaker. I have all the respect in the world for those individuals who work with electricity. We probably all have at least one friend we call “Sparky”.

Hunting season is coming into full swing and with that there will be more men, women, girls and boys out enjoying all that nature has to offer. Not all hunting accidents are caused by someone being careless and shooting another hunter. Some aren’t aware that electricity and its sources are all around us. Here are some helpful hints on how to be safe around Mr. Volt:

Be watchful of posted warning signs and keep clear of electrical equipment.
Do not shoot at or near power lines or insulators.
Do not place deer stands on utility poles. Energized lines and equipment can conduct electricity to anyone who comes in contact with them.
Be extra careful in wooded areas where power lines may not be as visible.

Here are four unrealistic expectations that will most likely lead to disappointment:

Expecting another person to make you happy.
Assuming others know what you’re thinking.
Believing everyone should agree with you.
Thinking you can change someone else.
