Centreville schools will remain virtual

Centreville Public Schools will continue to use a virtual-learning platform through the balance of 2020.

During a special board meeting Tuesday, board of education members agreed to move the return of in-person learning to Jan. 4. The district had originally scheduled in-person learning to resume Wednesday this week.

Superintendent Stephanie Lemmer said staffing factors were an issue, noting four teachers are in quarantine currently.

She said another consideration in support of remaining remote centers on student attendance. Lemmer said the district must have at least 75 percent attendance any given day in order to comply with the state’s requirement and the school day to count as an official day of classes.

Board member Margaret Miller said she understands the district’s situation is fragile and she supports remaining virtual. She did question, however, the risk of returning without a greater buffer from the end of Christmas break.
