Jim Murphy, 85

James E. Murphy, age 85, of Sturgis, passed away Friday morning December 4, 2020 at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.

He was born May 20, 1935 in New Bedford, Massachusetts son of the late John Joseph and Anna Elizabeth (Flynn) Murphy.

Jim’s early life was spent in Massachusetts moving to Michigan in 1992.

He was a graduate of St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore, Maryland where he received degrees in Philosophy and Theology. He later became a certified alcohol and drug counselor. For several years he counseled at an alcohol and drug recovery house in Coldwater.

He was active in Alcoholics Anonymous and encouraged those dealing with addictions to attend meetings.

Jim was a priest. He missed Christmas but arrived in Easter: the kingdom of heaven.

He is survived by his longtime close friend: Father Robert Mahoney of Sturgis.

In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.
