County commission approves hiring requests

St. Joseph County Prosecutor David Marvin appeared Tuesday before county officials with hiring requests.

Two days into his new job, Marvin was successful in his appeal to hire Gary Gabry as chief assistant prosecutor. As a result, Josh Robare will pivot to the role of assistant prosecutor, joining Casey Johnson. A third assistant prosecutor position remains vacant, though Marvin indicated Tuesday he will likely return to the board soon with a request to fill that spot.

Marvin said the department is severely shorthanded and bringing Gabry aboard will help steer the prosecutor’s office back in the right direction.

He said Gabry has served two terms as prosecutor of Ionia County. Gabry was also appointed by the governor to reorganize and chair the Michigan Parole Board, Marvin said, adding Gabry has been elected president of the Michigan Prosecutor’s Association.

Gabry’s starting salary will be $84,000, including benefits.

Commissioners also approved the position of document-imaging coordinator/secretary for the prosecutor’s office.
