Alice Marilyn Happel, age 91, of Burr Oak, died early Thursday morning, Feb. 4, 2021, at Skaggs Assisted Living of Burr Oak.
She was born Aug. 25, 1929, in Sturgis, the first daughter of the late Clement and Frances (Hibbard) Bothamley.
Alice graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1947. On Dec. 5, 1953, she married Vern L. Happel at First United Methodist Church in Sturgis.
Alice enjoyed her life on the farm. She was a wonderful cook, gardener and seamstress. She enjoyed all types of antiques.
Alice was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Sturgis and was highly active in many community and agriculture organizations, including Michigan Farm Bureau, Community Mental Health and as a 25-year 4-H leader. She served several years on the board of directors of Bank One and Citizens Bank in Sturgis.
Alice is survived by two sons, Loren (Ann) Happel of White Pigeon and Kevin L. Happel of Sturgis; a sister, Carol Gaumnitz of Peoria, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Vern Happel; her parents; a son, Duane Happel; and a sister, Janice Girton.
The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Alice Happel’s memory consider Adapt, 907 N. Clay St.,Sturgis, MI 49091; Sturgis Area Community Foundation, 310 N. Franks Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091; or a local charity of one’s choice.
Due to the recent restrictions regarding gatherings due to COVID-19, there will be no visitation or services. Private interment will take place in Burr Oak Cemetery.
The Happel family would like to thank Skaggs Assisted Living for the wonderful, compassionate care they provided to their mother over the past five years.
