Out and About – Week of April 12th

To all those Administrative Professionals out there, next Wednesday, April 21, is Administrative Professionals Day here in the United States and Canada. I guess that makes it an international event. The banks will all be open and you can expect your normal mail delivery.

Last March 16, a new Michigan Secretary of State upgrade went into effect. It securely combines tens of millions of driver and vehicle records into one integrated customer record system. This upgrade enables new online services for customers and expands the capability of self-service stations to include many driver’s license and state ID transactions. It includes:

Renew or replace an enhanced driver’s license or state ID if no photo is required.
View the status of the requested driver’s license or state ID.
Request and obtain a driving record.
Add a motorcycle endorsement to an eligible driver’s license.

Saturday, April 17, is the day to take all your household hazardous waste, electronic items, tires, paper and appliances and dispose of them properly. All such items can be taken to the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds in Centreville from 8 AM until noon. You must use the M-86 entrance. Cars can start lining up at 8 AM. Volunteer, because the world is run by those who show up.

In high school I took two years of Spanish. I can still count up to twenty and I’ll probably never starve, should I ever travel to a country where Spanish is the basic language. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to converse in the Spanish tongue, and I’ve done my best to get by.

Here in the good ‘ole USA, we Americans expect any foreigner to speak our language, yet if we decide to vacation in Cancun, we don’t give much thought to speaking their language. If we visit Paris, we get upset because the residents don’t speak English. There’s just something that doesn’t seem fair here. I think it would be great if every American would put forth the effort and learn at least one other language. Can you imagine how much better we might all get along? You don’t have to be proficient, but at least try. You’d be surprised how rewarding it can be.
