Samuel R. Currier, age 85, of Burr Oak, passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 with the love of his life, Cooky (Barbara Offenbecher) Currier, by his side. They were married for 68 years and were rarely apart for long.
Born on June 4, 1935 in Burr Oak Township, the 3rd son of Leo V. and Elizabeth (Nussbaum) Currier. Sam attended Burr Oak Community Schools. In his varied career, he worked at Wall Packing, Otto Kihm Tire, and Jackson Tire prior to starting his own business on July 1, 1973. Other than his wife and children, his business, Sam’s Tire Service, Inc. of Bristol, was his pride and joy. Subsequently, he was able to expand to Currier Tire Service, Inc. of Burr Oak. His business career extended to co-ownership of a wheel business in Florida, where he and Cooky spent many happy winters. He was also a farmer at heart and continued to work the land well past his retirement.
Sam had a mischievous sense of humor and, though he was often a man of few words, he was not afraid to speak his mind. He was a dog lover and excellent crafter of apple cider and apple butter. He will be remembered as a hard worker, a respected businessman, a loyal husband, and a devoted father and grandfather.
Sam is survived by his wife, Cooky, their 4 children: Ted (Cheryl Harker) Currier of Howe, Daryl (Vicky Krontz) Currier of Howe, Bobbi (Gery Brough II) (Currier) Mettler of Sturgis, and Roy (Peggy Lucas) Currier Sr. of Middlebury; 8 grandchildren: Elizabeth (Scott Kraemer) Mettler, Sara (Jeremy) Wilking, Kara (John) Brainard, Andrea (Nicholas) Armstrong, Adam (Mary) Currier, Roy Currier Jr., Katie (Ben) Hiscox and Lucas Currier; 2 honorary grandchildren: Olivia Bundy and Taraina (Craig) Allen; 11 great grandchildren: Jackson Hiscox, Kaden Wilking, Kamilla Brainard, Amelia Kraemer, Archer Wilking, Noah Currier, Max Kraemer, Eleanor Armstrong, Nathan Currier, Elana Hiscox, and Julius Armstrong; and 4 honorary great grandchildren: Charlie Glenn, Jonah Neal, Kenzlie Allen, Sophie Allen, and Bryan Bundy. He is also survived by 4 of his siblings and brother-in-law: William Currier, Mary (Currier) and Jerry Cronkhite, Elvina (Currier) Williamson, and Paul Currier I; his sister-in-law Bonita (Offenbecher) Lane; numerous nieces and nephews, his Finnish “son” Jan Sukanen; and close family friends, Ken and Dollene Sikorski.
