The Three Rivers and Sturgis Boys Golf teams began a new tradition tonight with the playing of the inaugural County Cup Match Play event at Sauganash Country Club. Three Rivers squeaked out a 3-2 win to take the trophy in the first year of the event.
Winning matches for Three Rivers were Garron Gahan 2&1 over Hayden Goodman, Sam Meyer 1-up over Luc VanderHulst, and Dominick Homan 1-up over Charlie Frost. Owen Sampson lost 2-down to Sturgis’ Austin Sanford and Isaac Adams dropped a tight match 1-down to Graeme Herald in extra holes.
“Sturgis Coach Nate Schwartz approached me a couple of weeks ago at an event and inquired about my interest in starting a match play event. Our girls’ teams have done something similar for several years and I thought it was a great idea.” –Coach Pat Kline
“The last match tied and came down to extra holes so everyone was following this final group cheering their teammate on. It was the most excitement I’ve seen at a match in a long time. Every event we play is stroke play, so playing match play proved to be a fun format for the kids. We look forward to continuing the tradition next year at Sturgis.” –Coach Pat Kline
Three Rivers is back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Hampshire Golf Course to take on host Dowagiac, and Plainwell.
