Conservation District plans river cleanups

Stretches of five different rivers will be targeted for the 11th season of the St. Joseph County Conservation District’s River Cleanup program.

Scheduled to begin in June, the 11th cleanup season will feature two June sessions, one in July and wrap up with a pair of weekday events in August.

Carolyn Grace, conservation district executive director, said the schedule is: June 5 on the Fawn River, Bauman Road in Fawn River Township to Fawn River Kayak; June 19 on the St. Joseph River, Liquid Therapy in Three Rivers to Withers Road; July 17, Rocky River, Null Road in Flowerfield Township to Hank’s Tavern on the River in Three Rivers; Aug. 13, Prairie River from Canoe Park in Centreville to Hoshel Road in Lockport Township; and Aug. 30, Portage River from Portage Lake public access in Mendon Township to Parkville Road in Park Township.

All events begin at 9:30 a.m., a half hour earlier than in previous years. Return transportation, a kayak or canoe, life preserver and lunch are all provided.

Anyone wishing to volunteer is asked to call the agency no later than a day before the scheduled event in order for organizers to secure the correct number of canoes and kayaks, as well as have an accurate lunch count.
